Our Norwegian Adventures
Last week we accompanied our daughter Olivia and traveled from Toronto, Canada to Bergen, Norway. Olivia is entering her 3rd year University in Canada and she is currently on a study exchange the Norwegian School of Economics and Business. I thought I would provide you with a brief description of Bergen and the surrounding areas.
Bergen is a big city with small town charm and atmosphere. It is known as the Gateway to the Fjords of Norway. The Bergen region has the ideal combination of nature, culture and interesting urban attractions. Some of the hilites we experienced included strolling through the Fish Market, cruising/exploring the Fjords, and taking a funicular up to Mount Fløyen (see photos).
Bergen was a major European trading and seafaring port and one of the Hanseatic merchants’ four most important trading centres. The population of Bergen is approximately 275 000. Trade, seafaring, industry, tourism, fisheries and oil and gas all play an important part in Bergen’s economy. It is also a major University city, boasting one of the top business schools in Europe.
As you can see in the photos, the waterfalls are cascading down the mountainsides. It is a spectacular sight! On our cruise to Mostraumen, the captain sailed the bow right up to a waterfall to catch a bucket of ice-cold mountain water for us to sample. Small fishing villages can be seen along the rocky shore. Of course, we sampled many of the seafood dishes while we were in the city. Another interesting tour we took involved taking a funicular railway up to the top of Mount Fløyen. The exciting 6 minute trip up the mountain is a magnificent experience itself. The funicular takes you 320 metres above sea level where you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the city.
All in all, visiting Norway was an unforgettable experience. I found the city of Bergen to be clean, orderly, and welcoming. The weather was mostly rainy and 14-19 degrees while we were there. Communication was not a problem as most people spoke English in Bergen.
