Quando poco più di un anno addietro Giuseppe Tortora, ricercatore del Sant’Anna, prestigiosa Scuola Universitaria Pisana, venne a parlarmi di un suo progetto per il trasporto del sangue ed emoderivati, capii subito che quella sua idea avrebbe potuto portare un contributo fondamentale a chi, come me, si occupa da anni, all’interno di un’associazione onlus, della donazione di sangue. Oggi abbiamo finalmente visto il nostro drone in azione. Si è infatti svolto nell’area dell’Ospedale di Pontedera (in cui io ho lavorato per tantissimi anni), un trasporto di sangue tramite drone, che ha viaggiato per un chilometro e mezzo a un’altezza di 25 metri. Il primo volo in automatico al mondo di un drone per il trasporto di sangue, in una domenica mattina di cielo splendente e caldo afoso, è andato benissimo, a giudicare dall’entusiasmo con cui il medico responsabile del centro trasfusionale ha celebrato l’atterraggio del dispositivo, rilevando e sottolineando che gli indicatori della sacca trasportata col drone evidenziavano che la temperatura del liquido all’interno era stata mantenuta perfettamente durante il volo. Ora si apre una nuova fase del progetto, la sperimentazione, che durerà almeno quattro mesi per poi aprire le porte all’utilizzo effettivo dell’innovazione che promette di ridurre dell’80% il tempo per il trasporto, oltre ad un notevole risparmio economico. Today we finally saw our drone in action. It took place in the area of Pontedera Hospital (where I worked for many years), a transport of blood by drone, which traveled for a kilometer and a half at a height of 25 meters. The first automatic flight in the world of a blood transport drone, on a Sunday morning of bright and sultry skies, went very well, judging by the enthusiasm with which the doctor in charge of the blood transfusion center celebrated the landing of the device, noting and emphasizing that the indicators of the bag carried by the drone showed that the temperature of the liquid inside had been maintained perfectly during the flight. Now a new phase of the project is opening up, the experimentation, which will last at least four months and then open the doors to the effective use of the innovation that promises to reduce the time for transport by 80%, as well as a significant cost saving. Quest’anno,in via eccezionale,non siamo stati in montagna nel Trentino,ma abbiamo deciso di fare una sorpresa a zia Nella, I primi giorni il tempo è stato un po’ brutto,ma per fortuna poi ha recuperato bene-Ovviamente abbiamo visto zio Andrea e la moglie Gisa,e passeggiando sul lungomare abbiamo incontrato dei cugini di papà e zia-Abbiamo fatto passeggiate ,incontro con parenti e amici .ovviamente mille mangiate-Come sempre Reggio è la zia nella ci hanno trattato bene!!!!

This year, exceptionally, we didn’t go to the mountains in Trentino, but we decided to surprise aunt Nella, to spend it with her dear The first few days the weather was a bit nasty, but fortunately she recovered well -Of course, we saw uncle Andrea and his wife Gisa, and walking along the promenade we met some cousins of dad and aunt -We went for walks, met relatives and friends, and of course ate a lot -As always, Reggio and aunt Nella treated us well!!!!

This summer we decided to go and visit a small part of the vast territory that Canada has to offer. We were attracted both by the nature and the opportunity to do a family roadtrip amidst amazing scenery, as well as the possibility of catching up with our Canadian uncles and cousins. The trip didn’t disappoint!

We landed in Toronto after a long day in planes and airports. A modern, very North-American city that the girls immediately loved. We mixed some tourism and some shopping for some basics as our luggage was mysteriously misplaced during the flights. In the evening, we got to catch up with the wonderful Olivia who is living and working in Toronto.
After this city break, we headed north. First stop was in Huntsville where Rosalba and Steve hosted us and treated us to a full Canadian summer lake experience, with canoeing, boating, tubing, swimming… as well as culinary delights ranging from barbecues to roasting marshmallows in the evening sunset.
Next, we spent a few days in a cabin in the Algonquin natural park. This is a beautiful and unspoiled park with lots of forests, lakes and rivers. We enjoyed hiking on some of the very well marked trails, biking along a disused railway track, and canoeing to a little island in the middle of the lake that the kids loved exploring. The other big hit were the chipmunks that lived near our cabin and were very friendly. A common sight for the locals but definitely a delight for the kids, as some were brave enough to come and eat some feed straight from the kids’ hands!
We then proceeded to head further north still, to the fabled land of North Bay. We spent a couple of days with the rest of the Zappalà family and enjoyed Enzo and Elena’s cuisine, Jude’s musical and hockey talents, and Kathi and Cristina’s never-ending array of games and fun. The whole family had a blast and it was wonderful to see how well everyone got on – felt like we had been all hanging out together for years. We tried to plant a few seeds in everyone’s minds that a reverse visit in Europe should follow soon.
Time was running out so we had to press to the last few stops. One evening in Ottawa gave us a sense of this historical city and the capital of Canada. The following day we headed East towards Montreal, with a short stop in a nature reserve called Parc Omega where the kids enjoyed seeing many of the Canadian animals up close. Montreal again had a very different feel to the other big cities, both from the language perspective but also architecturally with the old town having a more European feel. We managed to visit a large part of the city with a bike tour, and get a good view from the top of the panoramic wheel. We also got to meet the local police to report that our hire car was stolen! Of course this did not stop us as we were quickly equipped with a new vehicle and on our way to the last stop.
Just one and a half hours away we had the last two days to relax after the city life. We visited the “Eastern Townships” of Magog and Ayers Cliff, a tourist destination by the lakes here and we were again struck by the lovely villages and got to enjoy time on the lakes.

Quest’estate abbiamo deciso di andare a visitare una piccola parte del vasto territorio Canadese. Siamo stati attratti sia dalla natura che dall’opportunità di fare un viaggio in famiglia in uno scenario straordinario, nonché dalla possibilità di incontrare i nostri zii e cugini canadesi. Il viaggio non ha deluso!
Siamo atterrati a Toronto dopo una lunga giornata in aereo e in aeroporto. Una città moderna, molto nordamericana, che le ragazze hanno subito amato. Abbiamo mescolato un po’ di turismo e un po’ di shopping dato ché i nostri bagagli erano misteriosamente perduti durante i voli. La sera abbiamo incontrato la fantastica Olivia che vive e lavora a Toronto.
Dopo questa pausa in città, ci siamo diretti a nord. La prima tappa è stata a Huntsville, dove Rosalba e Steve ci hanno ospitato e ci hanno regalato un’esperienza completa delle attività estive canadesi, con canoa, canottaggio, tubing, nuoto… così come delizie culinarie che vanno dai barbecue alla tostatura di marshmallow ammirando il tramonto.
Successivamente, abbiamo trascorso alcuni giorni in una capanna nel parco naturale dell’Algonquin. Questo è un parco bellissimo e incontaminato con molte foreste, laghi e fiumi. Ci siamo divertiti a fare escursioni su alcuni dei sentieri molto ben segnalati, in bicicletta lungo un binario ferroviario in disuso e in canoa verso una piccola isola nel mezzo del lago che i bambini hanno adorato esplorare. L’altro grande successo sono stati gli “chipmunk” – un tipo di scoiattolo endemico. Un animale comune per la gente del posto ma sicuramente un novità per i bambini, dato che alcuni sono stati abbastanza coraggiosi da venire a mangiare un po’ di cibo direttamente dalle loro mani.
Ci dirigemmo quindi ancora più a nord, nella favolosa terra di North Bay. Abbiamo trascorso un paio di giorni con il resto della famiglia Zappalà e ci siamo goduti la cucina di Enzo ed Elena, i talenti musicali e di hockey di Jude e la serie infinita di giochi e divertimento di Kathi e Cristina. L’intera famiglia si è divertita moltissimo ed è stato meraviglioso vedere come andavano d’accordo tutti – sembrava che fossimo stati insieme per anni. Abbiamo naturalmente incoraggiato tutti a venirci a rendere visita in Europa rapidamente!
Il tempo a disposizione stava finendo, quindi abbiamo dovuto continuare alle tappe succesive. Una sera a Ottawa ci ha dato un’idea di questa città storica e capitale del Canada. Il giorno seguente ci siamo diretti verso est in direzione di Montreal, con una breve sosta in una riserva naturale chiamata Parc Omega, dove i bambini si sono divertiti a vedere da vicino molti degli animali canadesi. Montreal aveva un’atmosfera molto diversa dalle altre grandi città, sia dal punto di vista linguistico ma anche architettonico con la vecchia Montreal che aveva un’atmosfera più europea. Siamo riusciti a visitare gran parte della città con un tour in bicicletta e ad avere una buona vista dalla cima della ruota panoramica. Abbiamo anche incontrato la polizia locale per denunciare che la nostra auto a noleggio è stata rubata! Ovviamente questo non ci ha fermato perché siamo stati rapidamente equipaggiati con un nuovo veicolo e siamo diretti all’ultima fermata.
A solo un’ora e mezza di distanza abbiamo passato gli ultimi due giorni in relax dopo la vita cittadina. Abbiamo visitato le “Cantons le l’Est” di Magog e Ayers Cliff, una destinazione turistica sui laghi qui e siamo rimasti nuovamente colpiti dagli incantevoli villaggi e abbiamo potuto goderci i laghi.
Domenica scorsa, con i nostri amici Chiara e Alessio, siamo stati a Leonessa, un paesino vicino al monte Terminillo, per il “Palio del Velluto”, una sagra che dal Rinascimento al 2020 era sempre stata fatta per rievocare degli eventi di quell’epoca, legati a una figlia dell’imperatore Carlo V che sposò uno dei Medici e divenne signora anche di quelle terre, ma… Poi nel 2020 è venuto il Covid e tutte le manifestazioni sono state sospese, fino a oggi!!! Tutto il paese comunque, purtroppo anche devastato dall’ultimo terremoto, domenica è stato popolato dai suoi abitanti nei costumi del Rinascimento (tutti fatti a mano!), e inoltre ci sono state giostre con cavalli e cavalieri, parate coi tamburi, e un’ottima cena “antica”, che era stata allestita in vari punti: in una contrada c’erano gli antipasti, in un’altra le zuppe, in una piazzetta le carni, in un belvedere i dolci…! È stato veramente un evento simpatico e speriamo che questo paese così grazioso possa tornare a vivere!
Last Sunday, with our friends Chiara and Alessio, we went to Leonessa, a small village near Mount Terminillo, for the ‘Palio del Velluto’ (Velvet Palio), a festival that from the Renaissance to 2020 had always been held to commemorate events of that era, linked to a daughter of Emperor Charles V who married one of the Medici and became a lady of that land as well, but… Then in 2020 came the Covid and all the events were suspended, until today! The whole town, however, unfortunately also devastated by the last earthquake, was populated on Sunday by its inhabitants in Renaissance costumes (all handmade!), and there were also jousts with horses and riders, parades with drums, and an excellent ‘ancient’ dinner, which had been set up in various places: in one contrada there were hors d’oeuvres, in another soup, in a small square meat dishes, in a belvedere desserts…! It was truly a nice event and let’s hope that this pretty town can come alive again!

Finalmente, dopo quattro anni di assenza, per via del covid e problemi miei di salute, siamo riusciti a tornare a Reggio Calabria, a casa di mia zia la carissima Nella-
È stata una settimana molto ricca intensa,abbiamo ritrovato vari amici che non vedevamo da tempo, visto mio zio Andrea e la moglie Gisa, fatto lunghe passeggiate sul lungomare sulla moto e sulla sedia, fatto shopping sul corso, preso il tradizionale aperitivo del cordon bleau, e andati al ristorante-
Un aneddoto carino è stato che siamo tornati al ristorante dopo come minimo 6 7 anni la padrona del ristorante ci ha riconosciuto!Ovviamente ci ha trattato bene!!
Si è stato un viaggio lungo di 700 ma ne è valsa la pena!!Alla prossima.

Finally, after four years of absence, because of the covid and my health problems, we managed to return to Reggio Calabria, at my aunt’s Nella house. It was a very rich and intense week, we found several friends we had not seen for a long time, saw my uncle Andrea and his wife Gisa, took long walks along the promenade on the bike and chair, shopping on the course, took the traditional cordon bleau aperitif, and went to the restaurant.A nice anecdote was that we returned to the restaurant after at least 6 7 years the restaurant owner recognised us!She obviously treated us well!! It was a long journey of 700km but it was worth it! See you next time-As always, Aunt Nella did everything and more to welcome us
Questo fine settimana,ci sono venuti a trovare Tony e bambini-Sono arrivati venerdì notte(tra ritardi e cambio di programma all ‘ultimo).Abbiamo passato lo stesso un ottimo fine settimana ,facendo ristorante la prima sera,poi passeggiata,piscina cose varie in piscina-adesso li aspettiamo per la loro venuta in estate!☺️a presto
